Gastvortrag von Martin Winter zur Maskulinitätskonstruktion im Punkrock

Co-construction of gender and genre: masculinities in punk rock

All welcome!

The male domination of punk rock raises the question of how this domination emerged in spite of the egalitarian political stances of active musicians in this scene. I will go beyond the structural underrepresentation of women and ask how the musical genre of punk rock and gender are co-produced. Musical genres can be reconstructed as contingent results of boundary work processes with gendered subjects. Drawing on ethnographic field work and focus group discussions in the punk rock scene in Graz, I will show how punk rock is distinguished from other genres by constructing a specific anti-hegemonic masculinity. The male domination prevalent in most other rock genres is partly reproduced, but still the subject of deep struggles within the scene.
