The end of an era and a new start

Thursday, 12 October 2023

We are pleased to announce that although the Center for Systematic Musicology was dissolved at the end of September 2023, in its place there is now a new "Arbeitsbereich" (research area) in the Department of Psychology, University of Graz, since the start of October 2023. The name of the new research area is “Music Psychology and Brain Research”. The change follows the retirement of the Centre director, Prof. Richard Parncutt. It means that we have moved from the Faculty of Humanities (Geisteswissenschaften) to the Faculty of Science (Naturwissenschaften).

The head of the new research area is Prof. Annemarie Seither-Preisler. Other members include physicist, musician, and hearing therapist Dr. Peter Schneider, and linguist and APART scholarship holder Dr. Markus Christiner. We hope to be joined in the near future by a secretary and additional project staff. Our address will remain the same: Glacisstrasse 27/1, 8010 Graz.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those colleagues in the Dean's office of the Faculty of Humanities who supported and promoted the Centre for Systematic Musicology since its inception in 2009 and wish them all the best for the future. We also thank those colleagues in the Dean's office of the Faculty of Science and in the Department of Psychology who made it possible to found a new research area. We look forward to working together with our new colleagues in the Department of Psychology and to continuing our collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and the University of Music and Performing Arts in the Musikologie curriculum.

Richard Parncutt and Annemarie Seither-Preisler, October 2023
